CQUniversity to Streamline its Online Course Resources

New delivery of online courses to be piloted in Term 2/ 2009

As a number of staff and students would be aware, CQUniversity currently maintains two online Learning Management Systems (LMS) commonly known as Blackboard and Webfuse.

In striving to provide our students with a single, easy and effective online learning experience, a comprehensive evaluation was commissioned by CQUniversity during 2008. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine which single LMS would best support the University’s future operations.

This LMS evaluation included a group of students from a range of disciplines, campuses and modes of study who tested two alternative Learning Management Systems that were being considered by the University.

With a keen focus on the user’s experience, students were asked to evaluate the ease of use and navigation of each LMS. This involved a range of tasks such as finding course documents and completing simulated assessment quizzes, aimed at testing their ability to easily locate and use key online course resources.

As a result of this extensive and consultative evaluation, it became clear that an open source LMS called ‘Moodle’ was overwhelmingly preferred by the participating student representatives and academic staff.

Consequently in December 2008, the recommendation was adopted by the Vice-Chancellor and President that Moodle would be the University’s new single LMS and is scheduled to be implemented by the start of Term 1/ 2010.

To ensure next year’s transition to Moodle is effective and smooth, in Term 2/ 2009 CQUniversity will conduct a Moodle Pilot using approximately 35 courses and staff and students will have further opportunity to provide feedback on their ‘Moodle’ course experiences.

Students enrolled in courses participating in this upcoming Moodle Pilot will be notified by email on the first day of Term 2, Monday 6 July 2009, and be provided with an online Student Guide to Moodle along with an outline of the support and help options available throughout the pilot.

The list of courses anticipated to take part in this upcoming Moodle Pilot is
available online. For further information regarding this LMS Implementation Project, please feel free to contact the Project Manager Jeffrey Santamaria at j.santamaria@cqu.edu.au, or your closest Academic Reference Group Representative.
